The Effect of Font Choice
Just as colours can affect the emotional response from our audience, the same goes for the fonts that we use on our signage.
What does your font say about you?
Serif Font
Generally accepted as an established, classy and traditional font choice, serif fonts are used by businesses who want to portray feelings of trust. A brand looking for a sense of authority and respectability, such as finance houses or law firms would use this font.
Examples of serif fonts would be Times New Roman, Playfair Display or Georgia.
Sans Serif Font
Sans serif (sans meaning “without”) differ from serif fonts in that they lack the small decorative lines at the extremities of the letters. This simpler, easy to read font lends itself well to headlines and is recognised as a simple and classic font.
The honest and progressive elements of sans serif make it a favourite with tech companies, clothing brands and forward-thinking businesses who may make use of Arial or Helvetica fonts.
Script Font
The creatives among us love the sweep and flow of script font, looking as it does like beautifully crafted handwriting. The personal nature of script fonts tends to evoke an emotional connection with the brand.
Lobster or Lucida script are great choices for creative companies or those aiming for a ‘family feel.’
Display Fonts
Display fonts, such as used by Lego or Disney, throw the handbook out of the window and create something that they love. They are fun and unique, and if given enough time, can be iconic.
There are a ton of display fonts available such as Ravie or Jokerman which range from the stylised to the slightly manic, all of which are an enormous amount of fun to work with. However, be 100 percent certain that this is what your brand is all about before you commit to one of these fonts.
