Typography Tips for Effective Signage

by | Dec 15, 2020 | Signkor News & Articles

Typography is like poetry on paper. (Well, not necessarily on paper.) The clever use of stylized lettering to convey a feeling or a message – when done well – is both eye-catching and incredibly effective.

Our minds are captivated by hidden messages in design and we tend to spend more time appreciating what’s not been said, which is a real win for brands that want to stand out.

Typography Tips for Your Brand

One of the most important points to remember when considering an effective sign is that it must be easy to read. If people can’t make out what you’re trying to say, then you’ve just wasted a whole bucket of cash. Overly stylized lettering can confuse your message and may even render it illegible from a distance.

The size of the lettering in your sign will tell the reader what the most important part of your message is. This visual hierarchy can be used to great effect with both letter size and colour.

You may already have selected a font for your brand, but it’s worth remembering that in order for your text to stand out from a few meters away, you’re best off with a sans serif typeface such as Arial. They are easier to read and only require a glance to get your message across.

Don’t be afraid to experiment though. We are all acutely aware of the fact that there are thousands of brands competing for our attention every day, so choosing a font which is a little out there but still easy to read, may help you grab attention.

Some smart brands make clever use of typography to create a feeling. An old, saloon-style typeface on a rusty looking background over a swing door tells us that therein lies a few bottles of whiskey and a whole lot of fun. Conversely, a shiny stainless-steel sign with carefully placed lettering over a glass door indicates a feeling of corporate reliability.
