While there are businesses that specialise in creating designs for companies based on their individual needs, many businesses have in house graphic designers to assist with websites and advertising needs.
Whether you own a big design company or just hiring an in-house designer, when it comes to inexperience and bad design, you can create far more hindrance than a help. But how do you know whether the potential employee you are interviewing has what you are looking for or not?
Spotting A Bad Designer
There are a few key things to look for when you are interviewing potential designers, and these can easily tell you whether they will great good or bad design.
One Design
Inexperienced graphic designers often play with a similar design in various ways. Their resumes will look one-tone with little variety.
Bad Design
Designers with experience know that clean, neat lines are best. They avoid multiple fonts, conflicting colours, and overuse of photoshop images. This leads to bad design and takes away from the message you are trying to send.
No Questions
One of the best ways to spot a bad designer right away is a lack of questions. With no interest in your business culture or values, it will be difficult for a designer to capture and communicate with your clients.
Responses
You can tell a lot about a person by how they respond to various questions. If someone is slow to respond, this is never a good sign. Neither are spelling or grammatical errors as they show a carelessness, a focus on visual design without wording or a perchance of overlooking details. Bad designers also respond badly to criticism and offer no ideas of their own when asked about designs. A good designer always has an opinion to offer and can respectfully lead clients in the right direction.
